Greenhouse Effect

The greenhouse effect is the process by which certain atmospheric gases trap heat radiating from a planet’s surface, increasing its temperature. Gases such as carbon dioxide and methane enhance this effect. On early Earth, a strong greenhouse effect may have allowed liquid water to exist despite the Sun’s lower brightness. It is a key mechanism for planetary habitability.
