Atmospheric escape

Atmospheric escape is the process by which gases from a planet’s atmosphere are lost to space. Light gases such as hydrogen and helium escape more easily under high temperatures and low gravity conditions. Much of Earth’s initial hydrogen and helium were likely lost this way. A magnetic field helps protect an atmosphere from such losses.
